HUDSON SOFT/FALCOM
22 MARCH 1991
Gameplay-wise, this is drastically different from the first two Ys games. The action is now presented as a simple sideways scrolling slash em up with some quite jerky parallax scrolling and a more linear storyline. Its not all bad though, as the story is very involving and the urge to get further is irresistible. The music is just as amazing as Ys I & II with Ryo Yonemitsu arranging again. The intros are fantastic, but the American version suffers. Throughout, the acting is diabolical, and nothing is worse than the narrator at the beginning who sounds like he’s got a permanently bunged up nose. Also, whereas in Ys I & II, the names were kept 99% faithful, Ys III has its changes. Elena has become Elanor and the evil Galbaran is stupidly called Demanicus! The whole essence of the first intro is lost too: the US version describes it as the fight Adol has with the Demanicus, as though you’ve already completed the game whereas the Japanese version is describing a past legend of a fearless warrior that defeated Galbaran and sealed him away - only for him to return now. It makes much more sense, especially as the warrior is golden haired, and Adol’s mop is red! But all that aside, its still great, if a little too short and easy.
GRAPHICS: Some lovely scenery in places, but the scrolling is horrid.
SOUND: Just completely brilliant.
