HUDSON SOFT/INTER STATE/KANEKO
24 APRIL 1992
With one of the most excellent intros on the Engine, Star Parodier is of the highest quality from start to finish. As Parodius was a parody of Gradius, Star Parodier is a parody of Super Star Soldier. Choosing from either Bomber Man, a cute PC Engine or the Paro Caesar, you blast your way through some original themed levels and face some interesting enemies, like a huge black Bomber Man and a massive warship controlled by Mother Brain. As you’d expect from Hudson, the music is immense, as are the graphics, making this one of the finest overhead shoot ’em ups around. In fact, many people who hate shoot ‘em ups rate this as a great game!
GRAPHICS: Colourful, original and brilliant.
SOUND: Some of the best tunes on the Engine. Excellent.
A NOTE ON THE TITLE: In Japanese, Super Star Soldier is spelt more phonetically, i.e. Supaa Sutaa Soruja. So as a parody, Paroja is a contraction of Soruja (Soldier) and Parodi (parody). The title is written as Star Parodier - an accurate representation of the intention, and as this seems to be the common spelling among PC Engine fans (although Star Paroja is more correct to the romanised Japanese). All this confusion and word-play is probably why many import companies just settled on the less complicated Star Parody. Was due for release in the USA as Fantasy Star Soldier.
