NEC AVENUE/SEGA
UNRELEASED (1991)
So take the graphics from Fantasy Zone and the gameplay from Space Harrier, mix them together and...voila! Space Fantasy Zone! This game was due out for absolutely ages and as far as anyone knows, it was all boxed up and ready to ship, but never released due to legal difficulties. But there are a few mysterious copies out there... Anyway, what’s it like? Well, first impressions are not brilliant. Whereas you would expect it to surpass the Hu-card of Space Harrier in both gameplay and graphics, it pretty much fails to impress. Yeah, the graphics are pretty, but the scaling is no better, possibly worse, and there are rarely more that four background objects on screen at any one time. It’s harder to shoot things than in Space Harrier, and far easier to get hit as it’s often difficult to tell what is where. It’s ultimately an unsatisfying game, even for lovers of either SH or FZ.
GRAPHICS: Pretty-ish, but you would expect far more from a CD game.
SOUND: Some great arranged mixtures of tunes from both games.
