HUDSON SOFT
18 JANUARY 1991
Top quality platform action game based on the master of martial arts. Instead of going ultra-realistic, Hudson have chosen the cute factor for this game, with Jackie being a great cartoony version of himself. It’s set in days gone by, and Jackie’s girlfriend has been kidnapped by some evil guy in a black cloak (that’s him over there, see?). Anyway, it’s down to Jackie to run, jump and bash his way along the quite lengthy levels to get his girlie back. The game plays as quite a speed, so rushing it on many levels can work, which is good as there are many sub levels within each stage. Power-ups are mainly just simple extra moves, like a spinning kick or high kick, and come around regularly enough that you are rarely without one. Levels are quite varied as well, changing scenery often, and adding some areas where clever jumping is needed as opposed to fighting. And there are also some great mini games like kicking fish or punching a rock, and these all add to the fun factor. In all, it’s one of the best platform games on the PC Engine and one you really should have.
GRAPHICS: Excellently drawn, big sprites, and cool parallax.
SOUND: Some superb tunes, great sampled speech when you attack.
